Got a new bike?
Any bike is a significant investment whether it is used for exercise, a mode of transport to work, or for a hobby. Unfortunately, bikes are also very susceptible to theft – they are often ill-protected if not locked up properly, easily removable and hard to trace. Bike Register is the UK’s national bike marking and registration scheme, which helps to reduce cycle theft, identify stolen bikes and return recovered bikes to their rightful owners. Registration markings act as a deterrent to thieves in the first place because they know a registered bike will be harder to resell with potential purchasers who are able to check if it has been stolen.
At the events, officers from the local policing team will be on hand to register bikes on the national database, provide security marking and give crime prevention advice on how to lock them securely to deter thieves.
Research suggests cyclists are 83% more likely to have their bike stolen if it is not Bike Register marked. Officers are actively checking bikes on Bike Register to see if they have been reported as lost or stolen. This has now resulted in a significant number of stolen bikes being returned to their rightful owners. In the last year, more than 1,000 bikes have been registered by officers. If you’re buying a second-hand bike that has a BikeRegister sticker on it, you should check that it hasn't been recorded as stolen. When registering your bike with the police we use a highly durable tamper resistant QR Code label that gives your bike a unique BikeRegister ID.
No appointment needed. Just drop in on your travels and we can mark your bike there and then.
If you can’t make the Event but have a bike that you would like us to register and mark for you then please don’t hesitate to get in touch. 7312@lancashire.police.uk or find any other local officers on the In The Know Platform
We look forward to seeing you.
Kind Regards, PCSO Mohammed | ||
