The Hyndburn Neighbourhood policing Team would like to raise awareness with regards to online safety:- Do you know what your child is doing online? ๐ป๐ฑ Playing games?๐ฎ Surfing the web?๐โโ๏ธ Or could they be putting themselves in danger?๐ฉ We often get asked about some of the ways in which parents can help protect their children online, particularly when it comes to indecent images. The best way to make your child aware of the risks of sharing indecent images, videos or other sexual content is to have a really open and honest conversation about it. Whilst we know itโs an uncomfortable subject that lots of young people donโt want to discuss with their parents, itโs really important that they know their rights and know the law in relation to these types of images. So, do they know? ๐ค โก It is against the law to take, send, distribute or show indecent photos of a person under the age of 18 โ even if that person is them and even if theyโre sending it between friends. โก It is illegal to send a private sexual image of someone without their consent and with the intention of causing them distress. This includes images posted to social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Tiktok. It also includes sharing them via text message and showing them in person. โก If they are under 18 and they take an indecent image of themselves, they are committing an offence. Anyone who receives the image is also committing an offence.
